Are development perilious?

Sethu Samudram. a shipping canal project in the Palk Bay may turn perilous to the kerala coast, according to eminent speakers at the seminar. A recent seminar conducted on ‘Impact of Sethu Samudram Project on the Kerala Coast’, by the Department of Botany, Kerala University and the Centre for Innovation in Science and Social action pointed out the threats attached to this prestigious project of the centre.

Scores of fisher folk inhabiting in the coastline from Vizhinjam to kollam would be washed off creating an ecological imbalance. The oil and unwanted cargos flushed out by the ships will reach the coastal area .The Eco system on the shallow waters in the palk bay would be entirely destroyed.

There is no end to the damages .Many of the development activities put our environment at stake. Definitely development should be in the fore but does that mean we should forfeit our right to have a balanced environment.

Sopanam- A unique theatre group

Sopanam, a theatre wing of Bhasabharathi here in the south Indian state of Kerala has carved a niche for itself. The theatre group spearheaded by renowned poet
Shri Kavalam Narayana Pannikar stands unique not only in its style but in its way of presentation too .Even though many address it as a dance –drama fusion, Kavalam is all against that. He reinstates that what sopanam follows is the traditional drama which went alienated with the influence of western dramas.

Sopanam has its themes scraped from the Puranas and Hindu myths. They are often bent with a contemporary issue to make it more social. Nevertheless some are played as it is. Kavalam tackles the task of directing most of the plays but some have been directed by G.Aravindan, renowned director of yester years. The dramas of Shakespeare have had its part on the Sopanam plays like ‘Tempest’. Jean Paul Satre’s Trogen Women directed by Kavalam won wide acclamation that the script was even published by Allaince Francaise, the French art organisation at Thiruvananthapuram.

The theatre group has visited many countries upon invitation to perform in acclaimed stages. Ocassionaly many foreign art and drama universities recommend Sopanam to the students who insist on getting a feel of traditional Indian drama scenario.
